Portland's Metro Council President, David Bragdon, is moderating a discussion about the city's independent music scene, hosted by the City Club of Portland. I am very glad to be a speaker. All the details are below. Date: July 9, 2010 - 12:15pm - 1:15pm Live music by Boy Eats Drum Machine, 11:30-12:15 Speaker(s): Musicians and panelists Dave Allen, Rachel Blumberg, Jared Mees and Laura Veirs David Bragdon, moderator
For a relatively small city, the impact of Portland’s independent music scene has an incredibly large national impact. In 2007, Slate Magazine dubbed Portland “America’s indie rock theme park,” and credited the start of Portland’s independent music scene to Elliot Smith and later, Sleater-Kinney. Today, musicians from Modest Mouse, The Shins and The Decemberists all call Portland home.
On July 9, Metro Council President and music aficionado David Bragdon will lead a moderated discussion between four independent Portland musicians: Dave Allen, Rachel Blumberg, Jared Mees and Laura Veirs. These musicians will discuss the challenges they face and how they define success. They will also address the influences that contribute to the success of Portland’s independent music scene, how the ever-changing landscape of the music industry and music distribution affects their profession, and why we should care about the sustainability of independent music in Portland.
Arrive early to enjoy the jazz and electronic fusion sound of Boy Eats Drum Machine - Portland singer, producer, songwriter, visual artist and multi-instrumentalist Jon Ragel.
This Friday Forum is co-sponsored by City Club’s New Leaders Council.
